Rehoming – Profile
Ava was brought into us as an unwanted stray.
Behaviour observations on site:
Ava is a goofy girl who enjoys the company of her trusted humans! She has a lovely nature, a friendly and affectionate girl. She is a little skittish and easily startled by unfamiliar people and things. She can take several instructions to be comfortable with new people. She will need a calm, capable handler to be her rock and promote appropriate calm, relaxed introductions to new people and new experiences.
Ava is typical of a German Shepherd and is quite vocal when she sees novel things or other dogs/people but will carry on her walk with ease and is responding very well to training. Ava has benefited from having a smaller and slowly growing number of handlers, with steady introductions she has made some great progress with handling and making bonds. She warms to women faster than men but has made a male friend here at the centre.
With her trusted handlers Ava is a funny, playful, affectionate, goofy girl who is happy to be handled and very tolerant. For a big dog she walks very well on the lead, although she can occasionally jump at the end of the lead. She has responded well to training and seems to enjoy learning. She loves to roll around on the floor and have a fuss or to play with her toy.
Ava can be worried about new people handling her so she has been muzzle trained as a precautionary measure for vet visits. At the centre she has regular visits to the vet to keep her experience there positive and familiar and she is quite happy in the vets at the centre. This is something we would recommend for her new family to keep up with.
Avas ideal family will be willing to put in multiple visits to get to know her until she is totally comfortable. They will have previous experience with German shepherds or other herding breeds to understand her traits and needs. Ava would like a home with adults and only older, sensible children. She is looking for an active home with someone who will be interested in continuing training and finding other activities to do with her such as tracking. She will need a secure garden to play and relax in.
Ava is a fun lively girl with a great character who is eager to learn. Ava will make a fantastic companion and will flourish in the right home.
