Rehoming – Profile
Dustin was signed over to us in July as part of a multidog household, so we have very little information of his history.
Behaviour observations on site:
Dustin has really started to come out of his shell here at the centre and has multiple trusted handlers who he absolutely loves playing with and having a cuddle with! Once the trust has been built, Dustin is a lap dog and will happily sit on you for affection and settle happily. He will make a great company for someone and will give you a nudge for more strokes.
One of Dustin’s biggest hurdles during his time here has been his confidence with new people/members of staff and so his social circle of friends is small but ever-growing. Dustin’s new owners will need to be willing to put in the time he needs and move at his pace to build trust. This will include a hands-off approach until Dustin initiates contact, his confidence with new people has grown significantly and he will flourish with consistent handlers in a home environment. He is a nervous character with people he doesn’t know so new owners shouldn’t expect immediate affection from him and he may take a while to come out of his shell in his new home.
Dustin loves his treats; he is a fusspot for his favourites! We have incorporated these into his out-of-kennel routine to play games to build his confidence with the handler/new equipment and objects. This has also been very successful when introducing to new people to divert his focus.
Due to Dustin’s nervous behaviour, it has taken him a little longer to build up to wearing walking equipment. He is becoming more confident and will go for short walks with his trusted handlers, his new owners will need to be willing to work on this with him. Restricted to garden activity only will be necessary until Dustin has fully settled into his new home.
Dustin will make a brilliant companion dog for someone with a quieter lifestyle who can continue to give him the time and patience he needs to build his confidence.
We reserve the right to remove a reserve at any stage of the adoption process if we believe it is in the best interest of the dog.
Medical history:
Dustin has no ongoing medical conditions. He has been neutered, flead, wormed and fully vaccinated.
Ongoing behavioural support will be given to Dustin’s new owner.
Adopters should consider that previous medical conditions will now not be covered by insurance. Adopters are responsible for the on-going medical costs once the animal has been adopted.
