Rehoming – Profile

History:

Sammy was brought into us at the beginning of July due to change in circumstance.

Behaviour observations on site:

When Sammy first came into us, he was a nervous boy, who took a little while to warm up to staff. Once he trusted us, he has come out of his shell massively and his sweet, loving nature as shone through. Sammy is now generally happy to greet new people and have a fuss, he has a quiet nature but is now ready to find his forever home.

Sammy is nervous when he is over handled and having walking equipment, such as a harness, applied. We have started building a positive association with his harness, so that he feels more comfortable in this situation.  New owners will be shown his harness training and will need to continue this in the home.

Sammy isn’t too keen on being handled at the vets and may need to wear a muzzle at times. Because of this we have begun muzzle training him here at the shelter. Sammy does tolerate wearing the muzzle for short periods, but he isn’t keen on it. We have been doing positive training to make wearing a muzzle more fun. New owners will be shown this training.

Sammy can walk nicely with other calm, friendly dogs at a little distance but is unsure if they become too playful or interested in him. For this reason, Sammy is to be an only dog in his new home, but we would encourage positive slow interactions out and about to keep Sammy socialised and build his confidence.

Information given to us by the previous owners of Sammy suggests he doesn’t cope with being left for extended periods of time and he can become destructive. We haven’t seen this destructive behaviour at the shelter, but this is something that new owners must be aware of and be able to work through if needed.

Sammy is a lovely little boy who will make a wonderful companion, he is seeking a quiet home life with someone that can give him lots of love and attention. Sammy still loves to be out and about exploring and really enjoys his walks.
